South Shades Crest opened in August, 1995 serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade. A realignment plan in 2011 converted South Shades Crest to a school serving students in kindergarten through fourth grade. This most recent realignment has provided South Shades Crest with the opportunity to serve approximately 640 students each year.
South Shades Crest is committed to providing quality education in a student-centered, academically challenging environment. Multiple opportunities are available for students, faculty, and staff to reach their fullest potential.
Instructional technology is readily available to our students to enhance their educational endeavors. Each of our third and fourth graders are given the option to have access to a Chromebook device. These devices are made available as part of our district wide “Engaged Learning Initiative” (ELI) and are an integral part of the teaching and learning that occurs, so as to empower students to maximize their greatest potential. Classrooms also have Chromeboxes, iPads and projectors that offer interactive opportunities for learning.
Special programs are available for students needing additional help, as well as those needing academic enrichment. These programs include learning support, speech, art, music, physical education, chess, jump rope and juggling team.
Annual school wide events include book fairs, author visits, Red Ribbon Week, Cookies with Santa, Field Day and an end-of-year celebration. Faculty and staff members also enjoy Caroling throughout our South Shades Crest community during the holiday season.
Classes are self-contained with a student-staff ratio of approximately 18 to 1 in kindergarten and first grade, 20 to 1 in second and third grade, and 21 to 1 in fourth grade.
South Shades Crest Elementary School is an environment that is student centered. Our staff is dedicated to providing students with opportunities that foster lifelong learning by teaching skills, knowledge and behaviors students will need as responsible citizens in the global community.
